Kayla Martell’s Amazing Story

From the age of 10, Kayla Martell has known what it’s like to live with hair loss. She’s a very special person – and, she’s coming to Levitton & Commack, NY on September 27 & 28, 2016.

Meet and get to know Kayla – a former Miss Delaware.
You’ll Want To Be There.

Hair Loss Can Be An Attitude.
You Have Choices!

Q: Kayla it’s a pleasure speaking with you. You’ve become a spokesperson for hair loss and a role model, particularly for women. How did this all start?
Kayla – I was in fifth grade and my hair began coming out little by little and then by clumps. Losing your hair at any age is really sensitive. I wasn’t even in Jr. High and had to deal with this condition.

Q: And your condition is called Alopecia.
Kayla – That’s right – so there was no cure whatsoever. So back at my age, the only person I could really relate to was my father and that’s not the same, as you can imagine.

Q: For our readers, can you describe exactly how this went down. Your hair begins to fall out – did you first tell your parents?
Kayla – I’ve always been a very independent person. I started parting my hair in different ways each day – so you couldn’t tell. I used covers, headbands – so much so – I hid it from my parents for about a month. I was trying to internalize it but finally spoke to my parents about what I was noticing. Honestly I thought I was dying because losing your hair is so traumatic and it’s different because who around you is going through it nobody your age. We had a family member go through chemo so, I was associating cancer with this.

Q: That’s quite a thought.
Kayla – Thankfully, my mother was very pro-active. Her mother had cancer and died when my mom was nine. She’s a very calm person and took me to the doctor and it took months and months of blood work, needles and exams. Finally the diagnosis was alopecia areata.

Q: Finally an answer. What choices did you have? Alopecia has to do with autoimmune function.
Kayla – At that point were several cortisone injections to the head in the affected area, or to try to treat other symptoms and see if that helps. For example: I found out I had a thyroid condition, at that time. You hope that somehow if you treat that second condition it will help the hair loss as well. That didn’t happen, but I’m glad I found out about the thyroid condition.

Q: There still isn’t a real cure for Alopecia.
Kayla – No there isn’t, but you can live with it easily.

Q: You’re going to be visiting Hair Solutions in Levittown, NY, on September 27th & Commack, NY, on September 28th.
Kayla – I’m so excited. I love to meet people who may have the same hair loss challenges as I faced many years ago. There’s nothing like talking and relating. We all learn from each other.

Q: – We’ll do a part II after your visit. Thank you so much for your time because there’s so much more to this wonderful story.
